Local wildlife carers have given a deer the festive name Prancer after she was hurt in a car accident last weekend but has recovered fast enough to be released back into the wild before Christmas.
The roe deer was struck down on a local road by a passing car at the weekend. Luckily, veterinary nurse Emma Canill was quickly on the scene and managed to take the unconscious animal to a vets surgery for treatment.
While Prancer appeared not to have suffered any injuries, Emma rang the team at Secret World Wildlife Rescue in East Huntspill to check if it would be alright to let her go.
Founder Pauline Kidner said the deer could well have been temporarily blinded since this often occurs through stress in these situations. The animal was checked over again and this was indeed found to be the case.
Secret World’s carers collected Prancer and kept her under treatment at the centre near Burnham for the past few days, also dealing with an ulcer.
Fortunately, the animal was assessed to be fully recovered on Tuesday (December 23rd) and was released back into the wild by charity volunteer Roger Lucken, pictured, and Pauline.
Pauline told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are so pleased to have been able to release Prancer in time for Christmas. Hopefully, she will meet up with the rest of her family and may even be available if a deer is needed to guide Santa Claus on Christmas Eve!”
Staff and volunteers will be working all over the Christmas period to help with the casualties at the moment in their Centre. They will be on-call 24 hours a day if needed. Click here to find out more about the charity’s work.
