David Burland, who was group scout leader of the 1st Burnham Scout Group, appeared before Taunton Crown Court for a preliminary hearing.

The case was adjourned and Mr Burland, pictured, is due to return to court for a plea and case management at a date to be scheduled.

Mr Burland is charged with ten counts of indecent assault on a boy, four counts of gross indecency with a boy, six counts of sexual activity with a boy, six counts of causing or inciting a boy to engage in sexual activity and two counts of indecent assault on a boy.

He faces seven further charges of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, one count of indecent exposure, and one count of sexual assault on a girl.

The Scout Association said Mr Burland was suspended from any form of contact with the movement as soon as the allegations were first reported. He has been involved in the Scout movement since the 1990s.
