Cheering residents welcomed three Burnham-On-Sea cyclists into the town today (Sunday) as they passed through during their fundraising ride from Lands End to John O’Groats.
Martin Rogers, Kevin Crenol and Jason Emmett are hoping to complete the 1,000 mile feat in just seven days – and are on day three of their ride, having set off from Cornwall on Friday.
Despite a few aching joints, the trio are on schedule to reach John O’Groats, famous as mainland Britain’s most northerly point, by this Friday July 10th.
A large group of supporters cheered the group when they passed through Burnham on Sunday morning, visiting the Burnham Swim and Sports Academy in Berrow Road.
Martin told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was great to see everyone here this morning and we thank all for their support.”
“We started on Friday and reached St Agnes in three hours. We then had a hard day yesterday, completing 130 miles in 12 hours to get to Wellington. We’re doing 140 miles today to reach Tenby.”
“Our legs are fine, but they are starting to ache a little. The weather has been perfect so far, but we are watching the forecast closely. The conditions in Scotland later in the week are not going to be great.”
Martin, who is also in training to take part in this autumn’s World Duathlon Championships, added that the trio’s support vehicle, which was loaned to them by Middlemoor Water Park, suffered a puncture on Saturday, but driver Allan Pendleton has fixed this and they are back on track.
Martin, Jason and Kevin are each raising funds for three different good causes – St Margaret’s Hospice, Weston Hospice and Make A Wish Foundation – hope to raise over £2,500 in total.
Jason was cheered on by members of the Pawlett Rebels team, whom he trains
Martin’s brother, Pete, was on hand to support Martin
