Plans to build a new cycle route between Berrow and Burnham-On-Sea have attracted mixed feedback, it has emerged this week.
Over 30 people attended a consultation evening earlier this month to see the plans for an extension to the Brean Way cycle path, which currently runs from Weston to Brean.
As first reported here last month, it is proposed that the new path for pedestrians and cyclists will run between Unity farm and the Co-op in Berrow Road, also creating a long-awaited path along the Coast Road.
John Augustus, clerk at Berrow Parish Council, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There were mixed views and most were in favour of a cycle route running from Brent Knoll through Berrow and onto Burnham-On-Sea, but there were some concerns that Burnham and Berrow Golf Club may not give up their land for the cycle route.”
“There were some positives in that most people were happy with the change of route from the Co-op to St Christopher’s Road being pedestrian-only as most thought that the pathway would be too narrow.”
He added: “The change of the Golf Club section from mixed bridleway, footpath and cycle route to footpath and cycleway was highlighted and the ladies who ride horses there were satisfied with this. They prefer the current two bridleways onto the beach, they and other horse riders were concerned that these may have been closed.”
“Some homeowners on the Coast Road are arguing that the cycle route benefits the holidaymakers only and not those who live opposite the Coast Road and have to use the roadway to walk into Berrow or into Brean as there does not appear to be any access across the rhine to the path for them. Overall they seemed happy with the latest plans.”
The plans from Greenways and Cycleroutes Limited for an extended cycle path come a year after the opening of the first section of the Brean Way cycle path between Weston and Brean.
