Plans for a new coastal cycle path between Burnham-On-Sea and Weston have this week moved a step closer after being given the backing of town councillors.
Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge town councillors have given their support to Greenways and Cycleroutes Limited, which plans to extend the existing Brean to Weston cycle path along the coast to Berrow and Burnham.
The group oversaw the building and opening of the Brean Down Way cycle path between Brean and Weston last summer, as reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com.
This week, during a meeting on Monday (March 5th), Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge town councillors unanimously supported an off-road cycle route between Burnham and Brean.
Cllr Andy Brewer, who is a keen cyclist and a member of Sedgemoor Cycle Group, said: “This will create a safe cycle route between Burnham and Brean, getting cyclists off the Berrow Road. It is potentially very exciting.”
He added: “We are not being asked for funding at the moment, only for support of the project and for our logo to be used by the project.” Councillors gave their unanimous support.
In a Greenways and Cycleroutes document outlining the proposals, the firm says the Brean to Weston cycle route “proved immensely popular with over 28,000 trips recorded crossing the River Axe sluices in its first seven weeks, which was enough to make this the most heavily-used cycling route in Somerset.”
