A school of performing arts which had to move its training area out of Burnham-On-Sea’s Community Centre because of structural problems has started lessons in East Brent and other parts of Burnham.
Curtain Call School of Performing Arts had to move from the aging Community Centre in Berrow Road after part of the ceiling gave way in one of the rooms earlier this year.
The group has this week thanked supporters and members for their patience.
“All the staff would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who has helped them during their move,” Principal Patricia Ham told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week.
“We’ve relocated our existing classes from the community centre to other venues in the town, the Methodist Church Hall, the Scout Hut, King Alfred and St. John’s Church Hall. The classes in East Brent are brand new additions.”
“I have to admit we’ve had a difficult start to our term this September.”
“We had to start back to teaching later than planned due to the move and the first week was not without a few setbacks and a few last-minute timetable changes.”
“Curtain Call was unfortunately made homeless at the end of last term due to structural problems at Burnham Community Centre and had to relocate all its classes, while still keeping them as local as possible for all its students.”
“It’s been a real headache, but we’re finally up and running with a home for all our existing and brand new classes. Teaching from the Community Centre was so well suited to us as the rooms were nice and large and the parking facilities were excellent.”
“It also gave our students the chance to benefit from other organizations that used the facilities too. We have had several students in the Burnham Pantomime this year because they held their auditions at similar times to our classes.”
“It would be a shame if the building can no longer be used to its full potential. However, the parents and students have all been brilliant during the move, very patient, supportive and helpful. I’d also like to extend my thanks to a lot of the booking officers at various venues we’ve contacted who have tried so hard to be accommodating – we really appreciate it!”
She added that all the students are glad to be settled into their classes again, working for various exams and festivals.
“I’m very pleased to be using the Clocktower, which was a purpose built studio theatre at Rossholme School with a specialist sports floor, sound system and theatrical lighting. It’s very swish!”
