Council won’t take space in Burnham’s proposed cultural quarter

-

Burnham-On-Sea town councillors have this week voted against taking up space within the town’s proposed new Learning and Cultural Centre.

In a heated debate at their latest full meeting on Monday (September 3rd), thirteen councillors voted against taking up space, while just one – Deputy Mayor Neville Jones – was in favour. He said after the vote: “We’re shutting the door without knowing what’s on offer – it’s very foolhardy.”

The vote came after councillors discussed the minutes of a meeting of the Princess Hall Users Group and Burnham Community Association, held last week.

The minutes show the town council is happy to “act in an advisory role but would not consider investing capital at the current time.”

Cllr John Morgan said that £60,000 of funding is being spent on consultants to work on plans for The Princess Hall and its extension.

At the meeting, the town council also expressed concerns about how long the developers of the Tuckgers garage site – which was demolished in July – would wait before applying for full planning permission.
