Levels of crime in Burnham-On-Sea have fallen over the past year compared to the previous 12 months, according to new figures out this week.
Burnham Neighbourhood Team Inspector Sam Williams, pictured, told Monday’s annual Town Council Meeting that crime in the town has dropped.
“Burnham is the only area that has achieved a reduction in all crime over the last twelve months,” he said.
“The overall figure is down one per cent, with burglaries down 25%, and offences of criminal damage down 40%.”
Inspector Williams said a wide range of high-profile police activities are being credited for the positive trend.
“We have new no-cold calling zones, a successful Radio Link scheme, regular beat surgeries and PACT meetings, Local Action Teams, street briefings, and the new Dreamscheme in Highbridge. We’ve also carried out over 30 drugs raids in the last year, seizing thousands of pounds of drugs.”
He said that there are also plans to introduce a plain-clothed police officer in Burnham-On-Sea to tackle incidents in the town centre.
He added: “Detecting crime has slightly worsened to 25%, so one in four offences will involve people being brought to justice, and this is an area I’d like to improve.”
