England cricket star Marcus Trescothick MBE visited Burnham-On-Sea today (Monday, July 2nd) as part of a nationwide scheme to promote the sport in schools.
Staff and pupils at St Joseph’s School in Oxford Street welcomed the sportsman, who has represented England in 76 Test matches, as part of a scheme run by the Cricket Foundation.
Filmed by Sky Sports, he visited an assembly with Caroline Atkins, a member of the Womens England Cricket Team, and Matthew Counsell, Captain of Huntspill District Cricket Club.
“After the assembly, the Year 6 children took part in some cricket practice in the school’s playground,” headteacher Simon Kingwell told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“St Joseph’s was honoured to receive the visit from Marcus Trescothick MBE – he was given a very warm welcome.”
The event was covered by Sky Sports and is due to be broadcast on Sky Sports News today.
The Cricket Foundation launched Chance to Shine in 2005 and aims to bring competitive cricket – and its educational benefits – back to at least a third of the country’s state schools initially over a ten year period.
Marcus Trescothick plays first-class cricket for Somerset County Cricket Club, and represented England in 76 Test matches and in 123 One Day Internationals.
