Budding young cricketers from Highbridge’s Churchfield Primary School have won Huntspill and District Cricket Club’s annual Primary School Indoor 6-a-side competition.
The 10-week competition has been held at King Alfred Sports Centre and over 50 boys and girls from Churchfield, Berrow, St Joseph’s and East and West Huntspill schools have taken part.
The tournament, which was organised and run by Senior Club Coach John Davey, was won by Churchfield Primary School, who narrowly beat The Huntspill Federation.
The club’s Head Coach, Matt Counsell, presented Churchfield with the winner’s trophy.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The tournament has been running for the past eight years and the club would like to thank King Alfred Sports Centre and the local primary schools for their continued support and interest in getting youngsters playing cricket.”
“I and our other coaches are very much looking forward to working with so many enthusiastic pupils during the summer when coaching in their schools and at the club.”
This year for the first time the tournament was ran as part of the Cricket Foundation’s Chance to Shine Project, which will see the club deliver in excess of 200 hours of free quality cricket coaching in local schools, giving youngsters the opportunity to learn the game and hopefully take up playing long term.
Huntspill and district are an English Cricket Board Clubmark and Focus Club and if anyone is interested in playing cricket, training starts on Wednesday 11th April. The under 13s training runs from 6-7pm, under 15s from 7-8 pm and on Thursday 12th April for under 11s. The club is based at the Memorial Playing Fields in West Huntspill.
