Vandals set fire to seafront shelter at Burnham-On-Sea’s Marine Cove

-

Vandals have struck again at Burnham-On-Sea’s Marine Cove this week, setting fire to one of the seafront shelters.

The latest incident took place at around 1.30am during the early hours of Wednesday morning (6th November).

“It is with further sadness that another act of vandalism has taken place,” Sedgemoor District Council’s spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com today.

“One of the shelters and adjacent benches has suffered minor fire damage.”

She added that CCTV footage of the latest incident is being reviewed and the incident is being investigated by Burnham Police.

“We would ask any witnesses to contact the Police by calling the non-emergency 101 number or calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting crime reference 111/073/13.”

It comes just two weeks after vandals caused significant damage at the gardens, as reported here.

Police arrested two teenagers who have been bailed until mid-November pending further investigations.

Sedgemoor District Council said this week it is working hard to try and ensure the gardens are soon brought back into top condition for residents and visitors to enjoy.

“We were appalled to learn of the mindless vandalism that has taken place and have acted quickly to discuss the acts with the Police, cordon off the area and remove the loose/damaged items,” added Mrs Faun.

“Staff have also been working hard to assess the cost of the damaged items and obtain quotes for their repair. We will also be working with our insurers to recover the costs of insured items where possible.”

Portfolio Holder for Community and Scrutiny, Councillor John Swayne, added: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Friends of Marine Cove and the entire local community for being positive about the gardens’ future and in condemning these thoughtless acts.”

“The Council will continue to work with the Police to assist in their on-going investigations.”
