A couple has been rescued from rocks at Brean Down after getting cut-off by the incoming tide and having to watch helplessly as their car also become submerged nearby.
The pair, from Gloucester, walked along the base of the Down on Thursday afternoon (September 10th) to go fishing without realising the tide would come in so quickly.
Brean’s beachwarden Dave Furber raised the alarm after the couple’s MG car became surrounded by sea water, as pictured, before he spotted the two cut-off on the rocks on the southern side of the Down.
Two lifeboats from Burnham-On-Sea were sent to the scene and the relieved pair were taken onboard and taken back to the safety of the beach where they were met by Coastguards.
The couple – Phillippe Mutty and Angela Loughran – thanked the rescuers for the swift assistance.
Phillippe told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was a lovely day for fishing from the rocks and we wanted to get as far out to sea as possible and the fish as long as possible.”
“I have been to this beach several times before and didn’t think the tide came up so high but unfortunately today it came in further than expected.”
“I would like to thank the Coastguards, lifeboats, beachwarden and the police for helping us, and residents Robert and Kelly Heath who helped to get my car out of the sea. We really appreciate the help and have learnt a lesson here about beach safety.”
