Generous Country and Western music fans who held a series of fundraising events in aid of the Burnham-On-Sea Hovercraft have handed over a huge cheque for £2,300 to the group.

The main event of the week-long series of fundraising activities was a sponsored pull of the Spirit Of Lelaina hovercraft through Brean, which attracted large crowds of onlookers during the village’s popular country and western extravaganza.

Fans from across Britain flock to the annual western event, and the organisers Barbara Newman and Joan Hadfield from the Chevron Country Music Club said the collection boxes had been rattling.

“It is a good cause and when it is a local charity people often tend to give more,” said Barbara. “The Westerners have raised many thousands of pounds at Brean over the years and are always keen to help local organisations. We all think the hovercraft is an excellent cause.”

BARB spokesman Simon Triggol thanked the group for their support, saying: “We’re incredibly grateful to Barbara, Joan and all the Country and Western fans who helped and contributed to this fundraising event.”

“It was great to see so many people having a lot of fun while raising much-needed funds for the hovercraft – thank you all!”

All the money raised will go directly towards meeting the £20,000 annual cost of maintaining the hovercraft, training its volunteer crew, and funding the purchase of a second back-up hovercraft.
