Exclusive: Four Burnham-On-Sea town councillors to step down at election

-

Four well-known Burnham town councillors are set to step down at next Spring’s local elections, we can reveal.

Councillors Dennis Davey, Arthur Thorogood, Phoebe Harling and Danny Titcombe have this month decided not to defend their seats at the 2011 council elections.

The councillors – who are stepping down for different reasons – announced their decisions at a Conservative Party meeting.

Cllr Dennis Davey, a former Mayor and Sedgemoor District Council Chairman, will be stepping down for family reasons after many years in local politics.

And Cllr Arthur Thorogood will not be fighting his ward after 12 years in the post. He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I’ve enjoyed my time as a councillor but age is not on my side. I will be continuing my work with the Gateway and Stroke Clubs in Burnham and Highbridge.”

Former Deputy Mayor Danny Titcombe has moved away from the Burnham area with his fiancee and has therefore also taken the decision not to stand at next May’s elections.

And Cllr Phoebe Harling, who has been a town councillor for four years, will be spending time on other community activities in Burnham, including the town’s BAY Club and Panto Society.

A spokesman for Burnham Conservatives told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are in the process of choosing new candidates to defend these wards and a decision will be made during the next few weeks.”

Sedgemoor Liberal Democrats leader Cllr Joe Leach told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We will be fielding candidates in every ward in Burnham and Highbridge next year and are in it to win it.”
