Town councillor’s resignation may prompt Highbridge by-election

-

A by-election could be called in Highbridge after a town councillor resigned from his position this week.

Alan Miller, a Liberal Democrat, has stepped down from his council seat in Highbridge due to ill health.

Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Louise Potter confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The resignation was received from Mr Miller on Wednesday and Burnham and Highbridge Town council has been informed.”

“The vacancy will be advertised in the ward for 14 working days from the date of the formal notice.”

“Ten electors from the parish ward can request a by-election and, if ten do not come forward, then the Town Council can co-opt a person as a councillor.”

If a by-election is called, it’s unlikely that it can be organised in time to coincide with next month’s European Elections when voters across the area are already set to go to the polls. That election is on May 22nd.
