Council tenants in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge are set to benefit from a multi-million pound cash injection announced this week.
Homes in Sedgemoor and Sedgemoor District Council have received confirmation from the Homes and Communities Agency that £4million of ‘Decent Homes’ funding can be brought forward, £2 million into this year, to accelerate improvements to the Council’s housing stock.
The £4million will be used between now and March 2014 to accelerate the existing programme of works by delivering essential improvements to tenants homes including new kitchens, bathrooms, replacement heating systems, windows and doors.
Friday’s announcement means that the work will now be completed earlier and approximately 500 tenants will get their much-needed improvements sooner than expected.
In September, news was received from the Homes and Communities Agency that the final £13 million of Decent Homes funding had been confirmed and this further announcement has been welcomed.
Dawn Lang, Chief Executive of Homes in Sedgemoor, right, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This is absolutely brilliant news for tenants. Being able to improve tenants homes is one of our key objectives and to be able to do this quicker is amazing. We are already talking to our partners so we can get the works underway as soon as possible.”
And Duncan McGinty, Leader Sedgemoor District Council, added: “Having seen first-hand the difference these improvements are making to tenants, I am really pleased that we will now be able to offer this work to more of our tenants at an earlier stage of the programme.”
“The on-going work is not only transforming the lives of council residents across Sedgemoor, but also represents a huge investment into the Sedgemoor area, providing much needed jobs and apprenticeships for local people.”
The ‘Decent Homes’ programme in Sedgemoor has been running since June 2011 and Homes in Sedgemoor has so far delivered essential improvements to over 1,000 homes.
