Conservation volunteers armed with shovels, saws and wheelbarrows were out in force in Berrow Dunes on Sunday (February 17th) when a day of scrub clearance took place.
Twenty green-fingered local residents met in the Berrow nature reserve, opposite Sandy Glade Caravan Park, before setting off for the day of work.
The event was organised by Jeannette Burton, Sedgemoor’s Landscape Officer, and Normal Lees, Leader of Sedgemoor Conservation Volunteers, both of whom are pictured above with the volunteer helpers.
Jeannette told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “In addition to scrub clearance, we’ve carried out marram grass planting and buckthorn clearing – it’s been a very productive day. Many thanks to everyone who came along to help us.”
Berrow Dunes is recognised as an important area for nature conservation with the nature reserve deemed to be a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
At least 270 flowering plants have been recorded in the area. The reserve is actively managed by Sedgemoor District Council, Natural England and Somerset Wildlife Trust.
