A unique new comic-themed festival looks set to be held in Burnham-On-Sea town centre this summer.
The first ever ‘BOS Comic Convention’ is being planned in Burnham for the final weekend of August.
Organiser Jade Parkes, pictured right, told Burnham-On-Sea.com about the plans this week.
“We would like it become an annual event and expect it to grow quickly, attracting large numbers of people into Burnham-On-Sea,” she said.
“Other ‘comic con’ events, such as the one in Bristol, attract thousands of people and are hugely popular.”
She added: “The event won’t just be for kids – we’ll have something of interest for all ages. This will be a fun event to get people involved – from playing video games and retro machines, to seeing special vehicles, meeting special characters and having photo opportunities with Spiderman, Disney, Batman and Dr Who.”
“There will also be local stalls selling a wide range of comic merchandise and related products.”
The organisers say they hope to hold the first event on Saturday August 26th at Burnham-On-Sea Baptist Church in College Street and are currently seeking funding to enable it to go ahead. They have approached Burnham and Highbridge Town Council this week for £2,500 of grant funding.
Cllr Nick Tolley said: “I like the idea – and while few people here in Burnham will know what a ‘Comic Con’ is, that was the same case with the ‘Spray Jam’ last summer and look what a great success that was. I’m disappointed that Spray Jam won’t be held again this summer, but maybe this can take its place.”
Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton added: “It’s a very exciting project – I’d support it.” The Town Council’s Policy and Finance Committee is set to consider the plans, and the organisers are also approaching Sedgemoor District Council for funding.
