Burnham-On-Sea residents and police have this week stepped up their efforts to ward off unwanted doorstep callers with the official launch on Sunday (March 21st) of two new ‘No Cold Calling Zones’.
Set up by Police Community Support Officer Pete Williams from the Burnham North Beat team, the first zone covers St Pauls, St Andrews, St Marys and St Johns while the second zone covers Martins Close after local residents requested the scheme be implemented.
“These two schemes now put the total number of streets covered by No Cold Calling Zones up to 24 within the Burnham North Beat area,” PCSO Pete Williams told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“The zones are clearly defined areas, indicated by signs, which have been installed to enforce the message ‘no’ to all uninvited sales people.”
The new zones are being put in place by Safer Somerset West, in partnership with Burnham police and trading standards to try and prevent bogus callers and distraction-type burglaries within vulnerable areas.
In order for the zones to be successful, residents must be willing to join forces by being vigilant and reporting anyone they feel may be a ‘bogus caller using the Police Service Desk number of 0845 456 7000 or, where callers are in their road, by dialling 999.
