Residents in Highbridge have this week welcomed the launch of a new scheme to combat cold callers in the town.
The introduction of the new ‘no cold calling zone’ is part of a bid to tackle the often-unwelcome practice of doorstep selling on the Morland and Poplar estates plus other nearby streets.
Tina Gray, Chairman of Highbridge Residents’ Association, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Residents have been having problems with cold callers for many years, so we’re really pleased that the police have given the go-ahead for this new zone.”
The zones are backed by Burnham and Highbridge Police and Somerset Trading Standards to try and prevent bogus callers and distraction-type burglaries.
Scores of ‘no cold calling zones’ are now in place across the Burnham-On-Sea area, following the launch of the first zone in Burnham’s Ashcott Drive back in 2007, as we reported here.
The zones have clearly defined areas, indicated by signs, which enforce the message that uninvited sales people are unwelcome. In order for the zones to be successful, residents are encouraged to report anyone they feel may be a bogus caller using the Police service desk number of 0845 456 7000.
