Warning over ‘£5 coins’ worth 25p circulating in Burnham-On-Sea

-

A warning has this week been issued for shoppers and traders in Burnham-On-Sea to be on the look out for these coins circulating in the town.

Several holidaymakers have tried to use the commemmorative £5 coins to pay for goods at shops and fuel stations in Burnham over the past few days.

But the coin – which was issued in 1980 to mark the 80th birthday of the Queen Mother – has a face value of just 25p.

“There have been several incidents where the coins have been used to try and purchase goods for £5,” one Burnham shop owner told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“The coins do not say ‘Five Pounds’ on them and in fact have a face value of just 25p so people can quickly be out of pocket and need to be aware of them.”

Police visited shops in the town centre earlier this year to give traders advice about the coins. There is more information on the Royal Mint’s website here.
