Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards’ Christmas lunches were interrupted when they were called out to search for a suspected missing person.
Coastguards from Burnham and Weston were called to Brean Down at 1.45pm to assist the police with the search for a man who was believed to have entered the sea at Uphill.
An extensive search was carried out by the teams and an RAF helicopter plus two Weston lifeboats but no-one was found.
“We searched a wide area around the Down, but no trace of a missing person was found and the matter was therefore left in the hands of police,” a Coastguard spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
The spokesman added that the initial description given to police was vague and it is believed it was a false alarm, albeit with good intentions.
