Dozens of archery enthusiasts from across the UK gathered in Berrow at the weekend to compete in a national tournament.
The Coastal Archers hosted the eighth Somerset meeting of the British Long-Bow Society at Red Road Playing Field in Berrow on Saturday (25th June), as pictured here.
The meeting always proves popular and again saw large numbers of archers attending, some of whom had travelled considerable distances. The brisk wind provided challenging conditions for those taking part.
The archers competed in a ’round shot, two-way Weston Round’, where there were two rows of targets facing each other and the archers had to shoot first one way and then back the other. Four dozen arrows were shot at 60 yards and then four dozen arrows were shot at 50 yards.
“Even though this tournament has a reputation for being very relaxed with most archers shooting for enjoyment, the top positions are all hotly contended by both ladies and gentlemen,” Dorothy Rockett from the Coastal Archers told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
The results were as follows: 1st Lady Most Hits Mavis Reynold, Cheltenham Archers; 2nd Lady Highest Score Maureen Read, Moorshall Bowmen; 3rd Lady Most Golds Val Scull, Exeter Archers. Gentlemen: 1st Gent Most Hits Dave Williams, Newport Pagnell Archers; 2nd Gent Highest Score Willy Maybury, Launceston; 3rd Gent Andy Oakes, Exeter Archers. Junior Gentleman: 1st Jnr Gent Matthew Gash, Margam Archers. The John and Margaret Lewis Trophy for the best gold was won by Keith Hicks from the Coastal Archers.

A display of gonfalons – heraldic banners – was performed at the event by Exeter Archers, Torquay Archers, Deerpark Archers, Kenwith Archers, Coastal Archers and Margam Archers
