Co-Operative set to open new convenience store in Berrow

-

A new Co-Op store is set to open along a busy road on the outskirts of Burnham-On-Sea later this year, it’s been confirmed this week.

Work has begun this week on clearing the mountain or rubble from the site of the former Berrow Inn, where the new store will be sited.

Planning consent was recently granted by Sedgemoor District Council for a convenience store at the site along with three houses overlooking the golf course.

Barry Kew, Chairman of Berrow Parish Council, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “Most Berrow residents and nearby Burnham residents will be pleased that the work has started.”

“The giant heap of rubble has been an eyesore since the building was quickly demolished over 12 months ago.”

Sedgemoor District Council’s Development Committee approved the planning application for the site back in February. Bob Filmer, the committee’s chairman, said: “Berrow Parish Council spoke strongly in support of the development, saying the new facilities would benefit Berrow and north Burnham.”

“While concerns about traffic access onto the road had been raised by the County Council, it was pointed out by the Parish Council that the pub had been very successful and had handled access by delivery lorries and customers’ cars.”
