Highbridge’s brand new £20,000 town clock has been officially unveiled by the town’s Mayor as part of this weekend’s Jubilee celebrations.

The brand new four-faced structure in the town’s Jubilee Gardens has been funded by donations and pledges from local people.

Among a large crowd of residents who watched Saturday’s ceremony were some of the local people who donated funds plus members of Highbridge Dreamscheme and a band from Burnham and Highbridge’s twin town of Le Ferre, who played in the gardens.

The new clock has been introduced to replace the three-faced structure, which was showing its age and was started to crumble and corrode.

Donations and pledges amounting to £16,700 were received from around 30 residents and businesses, including one single donation of £5,000 and £8,000 from Raglan Housing Association.

Mayor Ken Smout told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s great to see this new clock officially unveiled after a great deal of work behind the scenes.”

“This new clock shows the strength of community we have here in Highbridge – and I thank all who have supported the fundraising.”

Councillor Mike Mansfield, who collected much of the funds, was especially thanked for his efforts. Those who have given donations will be acknowledged on a plaque to be sited at Highbridge Community Hall.
