Royal link will be retained on new Highbridge town clock

-

A new town clock that is set to be built in the centre of Highbridge will be dedicated to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, town councillors have decided.

At the latest town council meeting, councillors voted in favour of trying to secure funding to purchase a new three-faced clock, to be sited in Jubilee Gardens in place of the current one.

It was also decided that it would be appropriate to dedicate the new clock for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in the same way as the original clock was dedicated to the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.

Town Clerk Eileen Shaw told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “In coming to this decision, members recognised that it was financially unviable to repair the existing clock works because of the poor condition of the concrete pillar on which it stands.”

“Whilst it is possible to make repairs to the pillar, there is no guarantee that similar problems will not re-occur.”

The clerk was instructed by councillors to pursue all avenues of funding for a new clock, and she will be writing to all those residents who have already given money for the restoration of the existing clock.

Anyone wishing to make a donation towards a new clock should write to the Town Clerk at the Council offices in Jaycroft Road.

“All donors may rest assured that all money donated will be used for the clock and nothing else, and that if the fund is oversubscribed, any monies not required will be ring-fenced for the future maintenance of the clock,” added Mrs Shaw.

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported earlier this month that Raglan Homes which is building a new development of houses next to the town’s Asda store, may give up to £15,000 of community arts funding towards the cost of the new clock.
