The project to replace Highbridge Town Clock has been given a financial boost this week.
Burnham and Highbridge Town Council has been told by Sedgemoor District Council that £10,000 of community arts funding from Raglan Homes, which is building a new development of houses next to the town’s Asda store, can be spent on a replacement clock.
It means the purchase of a new three-faced clock, to be sited in Jubilee Gardens in place of the current one, has stepped closer.
Town clerk Eileen Shaw told Monday’s town council meeting: “The district council has confirmed they have no problem in allocating funding from Raglan to the new clock. More funds will still be needed from local people and businesses, though.”
She added that discussions are underway with Hawkins Clocks to agree a design for the clock and its new base.
It was also agreed that it would be appropriate to dedicate the new clock to the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in the same way that the original clock was dedicated to the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
