Streets, pavements and beaches in Burnham-On-Sea should be free of litter this summer following a decision by the Town Council to employ two new cleaners.
A full-time town centre cleaner is being added to the council’s staff to keep streets litter-free, including at weekends.
A part-time cleaner is also being employed on a six-month contract to keep Burnham’s beach and Esplanade (pictured) tidy during the summer months.
“The posts are being introduced via a contract with Sedgemoor District Council, with the Town Council contributing to the costs,” Town Clerk Eileen Shaw explained to Burnham-On-Sea.com.
Cllr Eric Gill, Chairman of the Town Council’s Town Improvements Committee, said there were no current plans for a similar position for Highbridge, but that it was felt necessary for Burnham as a tourist town.
A District Council spokeswoman added: “The town centre cleaner is funded 50/50 between the two councils, while The Esplanade cleaner is fully funded by SDC. The new cleaner has a permanent presence on the seafront so that he can respond to overflowing bins and other litter issues. He supplements the Clean Surroundings Team who start at 7am on The Esplanade. He has a later starting time, so that we can extend the times that cleaning is done. This also applies to the Town Centre cleaner.”
“One of the key duties of the new cleaners is to be available later in the afternoon and early evening to cope with the litter from the day’s activities. By mixing and matching, we are increasing the times in which The Esplanade and town centre are cleaned.”
