The driver of this 1928 classic vehicle was lucky to escape with only bumps and scratches after it plunged off the road near Burnham-On-Sea at the weekend.
Emergency services from Burnham rushed to The Causeway between East Huntspill and Woolavington after the driver lost control of the 1928 Packard on Saturday.
Owner Gerry Wheeler told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There were two cars in a procession to a wedding pick-up in Highbridge. As the driver approached a sharp bend, a cyclist pulled out into the road and the car in front braked but the Packard driver accidentally hit the accelerator pedal rather than the brake.”
“The car went forward into the grass verge, then slid down into the ditch.”
Gerry added: “The car suffered front-end damage with the metalwork being put out of shape. The running board was also damaged, and some of the ditch water also seaped into the car.”
He added that the wedding couple in Highbridge did not have to alter their plans as another classic car, which was at the nearby Webbington Hotel, was sent to pick them up instead.
Inspector Roger Tolley of Burnham Police told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We were called to an accident in which a classic limousine ended up in a ditch. The elderly gentleman inside suffered minor head injuries.”
Originally owned by a titled person in Yorkshire, the car was acquired by its current owner in 1998, who refurbished it. It has a 4.5 litre engine.
A Burnham fire crew was also sent to the scene on Saturday as a precaution amid concern that fuel may be leaking into the ditch.
