Michael Eavis to be VIP guest at Burnham and Highbridge Civic Service

-

Michael Eavis, the founder of The Glastonbury Festival, is to be the special guest at this year’s Burnham and Highbridge Civic Service next month.

Mr Eavis – pictured here in Burnham last month – will lead the towns’ annual Civic Service at St Andrew’s Church on Sunday 14th September.

The recepients of this year’s Civic Awards are due to be announced during the next two weeks but it is understood that the awards will go to two couples and a local professional man.

Former Mayor Cllr Neville Jones, who initiated the awards, now in their 28th year, said: “Michael Eavis is no stranger to Burnham. He told me when I asked him to open the Information Centre on the Esplanade three years ago that he likes to come to Burnham for its friendliness and sandy beaches and feels at home when he is visiting.”

Last year, Mr Eavis said in a national newspaper interview that Burnham is his favourite place in Somerset, as we featured here. He praised the town for being “laid back and unspolit.”

The annual Civic Awards are drawn up from a list of nominees, submitted to the Town Council by members of the public, following an announcement earlier this year. Because of town council elections next year, it is likely that submissions will be sought next January, for 2015.

Mr Eavis has featured on Burnham-On-Sea.com several times in recent years for his visits to the town. In 2008, he was the VIP guest that turned on Burnham’s Christmas lights, as we featured here. And in 2011, he opened the community-run tourist information centre on The Esplanade, as featured here.
