Burnham-On-Sea’s Ritz Cinema will be celebrating its 80th anniversary in July when its owners will be offering cut-price tickets for a full month to thank the community for its support.
The cinema in Victoria Street, which has three screens, originally opened in 1936.
Its current owners, Pat and Beryl Scott, pictured, who have run it for 12 years, are planning to celebrate the anniversary in a special way next month.
“Tickets will be reduced to just £4 between July 1st-28th from the usual charge of £7.40 so that all the community can come along and share in our celebration,” said Beryl.
“It’s a big milestone, and since the cinema’s success is down to the wonderful support of the people of Burnham and Highbridge, we wanted to give them something back as a thank you.”
The building has been used as a cinema since 1936 – click here for 1936 memorabilia from the cinema’s opening – when it had more than 500 seats, however due to dwindling visitor numbers it was forced to close in 2002.
Pat and Beryl spent more than £120,000 renovating the building after they took on the building. They re-opened the cinema on September 17th 2004 with two new large screens, state-of-the-art projectors plus air conditioning and seating for up to 230 people.
Since then, the facility has become a well-used, thriving part of Burnham’s social life. Its third screen opened for the first time last October.
