The construction of a brand new £6.3m school in Highbridge will go ahead despite the government scaling back its spending on the country’s schools modernisation programme, it has been announced this week.
Somerset County Council confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com that building work for the multi-million pound Churchfield Primary School – which will replace St John’s and Beechfields – will go ahead as planned.
Cllr John Osman, Cabinet Member for Children & Young People, confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Somerset County Council has secured funding from the Government’s Primary Capital Programme for the amalgamation of the new Churchfield School in Highbridge.”
“We anticipate that the new school will be open, as scheduled, in the new school year in September 2012.”
There were concerns earlier this month that the building project could be delayed or scrapped under cost-cutting plans by the government to reduce the budget defecit.
Proposals to amalgamate Beechfield and St John’s into Churchfield Primary School were given a green light by the County Council last year.
The newly-amalgamated school will open this September, with the new school building work going on in the background. The new facilities are due to be built on the current site at a cost of £6.3m.
