Pupils at Churchfield Primary School in Highbridge have been presented with 50 saplings by a Somerset garden centre to mark their move into a new school building later this year.
The school has received the small trees from Monkton Elm Garden Centre in Monkton Heathfield, near Bridgwater, to plant in commemoration of the move.
Margaret Micklewright, Forest School Leader at Churchfield, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are moving into a brand new building in September so this is an exciting time for our school.”
“We are thrilled to have received the small trees from Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre. Our gardening club will plant the saplings to commemorate this occasion, along with the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics.”
“The school gardening club was set up last autumn. So far the children have planted small plants and bulbs but haven’t yet had the opportunity to plant saplings so they are really looking forward to this.”
The sapling giveaway has been running for three years. In January, not-for-profit organisations were invited to apply for between 50 and 100 small saplings, known as whips, to help with conservation projects.
Andrew Pitman, Plant Manager at the centre, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are delighted to have been able to lend a helping hand to schools, community groups and charities again this year by providing them with saplings that are ideal for hedging or creating small woodland areas.”
