Angry town councillors have this week stepped up their calls for action to halt the ongoing problem of vehicles parked along pavements in the centre of Highbridge.
The latest concerns come after the town council received a letter on the matter from Liam Gill, Somerset County Council’s Assistant Highways Service Manager for Sedgemoor, that gave no schedule for the problem to be resolved.
He explained that the kerb line in front of the new development outside the old ‘Normans’ site would be raised, but added that he is not in a position to approve the installation of raised flower beds or bollards to prevent parking.
This option, he said, “would be considered once the installation works were complete” – although no timetable for the work has been put forward.
“This is a very unsatisfactory position,” said Cllr Neville Jones at this week’s town council meeting. “After six months of highlighting this problem, this really isn’t good enough.”
“It’s quite incredible that cars are still parking along the pavement and pedestrians have to walk around them – sometimes onto the road – to make their way along Church Street.”
Highbridge town councillor Pat Burge added that she, too, is also concerned about the matter and had “complained so many times about it but was getting nowhere.”
Town Clerk Eileen Shaw said would press the Highways team to find out when the work would happen.
