Higbridge at a standstill as three months of roadworks gets underway

-

The centre of Highbridge was brought to a standstill on Monday (January 26th) when three months of major roadworks began.

Despite assurances from Somerset County Council that the work would not cause too much disruption, motorists faced long queues along Church Street, as pictured here.

The A38 was partially closed at the clock roundabout, causing long tailbacks for drivers.

Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report the work earlier this month. Gas mains along Church Street are being replaced between January 26th and the end of April.

Signs warning motorists to “expect long delays” have been in place along the town’s roads for several weeks, but local councillors are concerned that not enough is being done to prevent the work hurting the trade of local businesses.

Somerset County Council spokeswoman Jan Hookings told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Disruption will be kept to a minimum. We don’t expect the work to have too major an impact.”
