A familiar landmark in Burnham-On-Sea is getting a £100,000 overhaul as part of a major new project.
Scaffolding has gone up around the main tower of St Andrew’s Church in Burnham, as pictured here, to allow the repair to the stonework to get underway.
Stonemasons will be repointing large areas of the tower, recarving sections of the windows which have suffered from the ravages of time and some internal work is also underway.
The work will continue into December and it’s hoped that the project will be completed in time for Christmas.
Vicar Rev Graham Witts told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Church buildings have a five-year inspection on the fabric of the building and this showed some major damage to the stoneworks which needed urgent attention.”
“The works will cost in the region of £100,000. We are fortunate to have funds to carry out this work.”
“We hope that once this work is done to be able to redecorate the interior of the church and have a new lighting system but until the building is watertight this will not take place. There is no basis to the rumour that we are straightening the tower!”
The stonemasons carrying out the work are Wells Cathedral Stonemasons, based in Cheddar.
The 700th anniversray of the church has been marked this year with many celebrations, which will include a special gala concert this Saturday (October 3rd) at 7.30pm in the church.
