Shops in Burnham-On-Sea saw a mixed Christmas of trade, although the overall trend was down on last year.
Alex Turco, Chairman of the town’s Chamber of Trade, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “There’s been variable feedback about business, but we can say with a reasonable level of certainty that footfall in the town leading up to Christmas was noticeably lower than last year.”
“Overall sales are down compared to 2007 but with dramatic variability between different businesses. Retailers in Burnham who offered early sales benefitted.”
He added: “Businesses with an online presence have faired reasonably, but 2009 is expected to be a tough year.”
It comes after the Chamber of Trade recently urged shoppers to support local businesses by buying in Burnham.
