Burnham-On-Sea traders experienced a mostly positive festive season of business amid an increase in visitor numbers to the town centre.
Footfall counters in Burnham-On-Sea town centre show there were 5.8% more shoppers in the High Street in the run-up to Christmas than a year before.
Burnham-On-Sea.com has spoken to shop owners along the High Street to find out how they fared over the holiday period.
Jax Gardiner-White at Gardiner-Whites greengrocers said: “It was an amazing first Christmas of trade for us. The local support has been marvellous and has surpassed our expectations!”
Julie Dean at Burnham florist Flowers and Things: “We had a mostly busy holiday period in the run-up to Christmas – there has been good local support.”
The team at Sentiments added: “We had good trade during December, but overall it’s been about the same as last Christmas.”
Gary Stacey at High Street gift shop John’s Shop added: “We’ve been very busy – the final few days before Christmas were awesome! Our trade is well up on last Christmas.”
GW Hurleys’ Colin Morris added: “The Christmas period ticked over for us – it certainly wasn’t anything fantastic.”
Sweet Shack’s Lyn Laurence added: “We saw steady trade in the run-up to Christmas. Overall it was okay – around the same as the year before. We have good trade from some locals, but I look forward to the spring and summer coach visitors.”
Fishmonger Seafoods said: “We had a very busy pre-holiday period with many poultry and fresh food orders in the last few days before Christmas.”
And Carrie Wheadon at Bastins said that while their shop had been busy over the holidays, “trade was slightly down on last Christmas.”
