Over 300 people crowded into Burnham-On-Sea’s St Andrew’s Church on Saturday evening (April 23rd) to watch the town’s Choral Society give a powerful performance of the popular ‘The Armed man’, a Mass for Peace.
Under the expert direction of Nicholas Bromilow, more than 50 members of the society gave a memorable two-hour performance.
The audience was so large that seats quickly ran out and some spectators had to sit upstairs on the overflow seating on the balcony.
It was also a special evening for Bev Hearn, Chairman of Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society, who stepped down from his role after seven years.
Vice Chairman David King presented him with an engraved glass decanter on behalf of the society. He said: “Bev has been a superb Chairman, and we thank him for all his work over the years.”
David added: “It was a fantastic evening, capped with a standing ovation at the end and lots of positive comments, which were so appreciated by all the society’s members. This was our largest audience to date.”
The choir were accompanied by a small vibrant orchestral ensemble and soloist Katy Garden. It was the second time that the choir have sung this piece of music by Karl Jenkins, with the previous time being in 2006 when they were the first Somerset choir to perform it.
