Children in Burnham and Highbridge have been celebrating Chinese New Year with a range of colourful activities.

At Highbridge Children’s Centre, the youngsters learned how to write simple Chinese symbols, including numbers, use chopsticks and taste delicious Chinese food. They also made a trip to a local Chinese takeaway to find out how the food is prepared.

Manager Julian Plested told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The week culminated in the children creating and then parading their very own dragon costume. Everybody learned a lot about Chinese culture, while enjoying themselves and having fun.”

And at Burnham’s Octopus Centre more than 50 youngsters took part in a two-day Chinese New Year celebration.

Staff and children donned fancy dress and learned about Chinese traditions and customs. Burnham’s Taste of The Orient restaurant provided items for the event.

Angela Stone, Family Support Worker at the Octopus Centre, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The children enjoy celebrating different festivals and cultures from around the world. Our two-day Chinese New Year celebrations involved as many children as possible, from babies upwards, taking part in making drums, lanterns, dragons and traditional food.”
