Burnham Chinese takeaway owner prosecuted over food hygiene

The owner of a Burnham-On-Sea Chinese takeaway has been prosecuted for eight food hygiene offences.

Wai Tung Lee, who runs China Garden in Abingdon Street, has been fined £320 with costs of £200 by Taunton Magistrates Court.

The court also imposed a hygiene prohibition order on the premises preventing trading until the condition of the takeaway and equipment is brought up to an acceptable standard.

The prosecution arose from an unannounced food hygiene inspection undertaken in December 2017. We reported here how the takeaway got a zero rating.

The inspection revealed a general poor standard of food hygiene, including the premises being unclean and in poor condition, while it also highlighted inadequate hand washing facilities including no hot water or cleaning and drying facilities.

Inspectors also found surfaces, fittings and equipment in contact with food were not in sound condition enabling them to be cleaned and disinfected.

Also discovered was a failure to remove refuse, failure to store raw materials in appropriate conditions, failure to implement and maintain hazard analysis and critical control points procedures and a general lack of understanding of food hygiene principles.

Further inspections in February and June this year revealed a slight improvement in cleanliness but many of the issues previously identified remained.

Sedgemoor District Council says its environmental health department have been working closely with Lee to improve his takeaway’s food hygiene status.
