Burnham-On-Sea’s new £500,000 Octopus Children’s Centre was officially opened during a special ceremony on Friday afternoon (July 11th).

The centre – which has been developed by Somerset County Council in partnership with Sedgemoor District Council, the local parish council and other groups – was opened with the unveiling of a plaque.

Julie Simmonds, the new centre’s manager, welcomed visitors to the facility, before David Taylor, Somerset County Council’s Corporate Director, officially thanked those who had worked on the project over the last few years.

He said the centre is the 30th to be opened in Somerset. “It brings together education and care, help and family support, in one accessible location,” he said.

Burnham Infants School, which is on the same site as the centre, gave a colourful country dancing display during the afternoon.

And the official ribbon cutting ceremony was performed by the Bartlett family, a Burnham family who won a competition to choose the name of the centre, Octopus Centre.

Local County Councillor Rosemarie Parsons told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This Children’s Centre is a valuable addition to Burnham. The new facilities will be a key point of access to services for our local parents and children. I am pleased that we have reached this stage and am grateful for the hard work of the local steering group and officers from Somerset County Council.”

A plaque was uncovered by the children during the centre’s official opening.

The colourful plaque is at the entrance to the new £500,000 centre.

Burnham Infant School performed country dancing during the opening event.
