A group of Burnham-On-Sea residents has this week called for road safety signs to be re-introduced along a busy road bend in the town before a serious accident occurs.
Home owners in Highbridge Road told a Town Council meeting last night (Wednesday) that they fear an accident will take place because Somerset County Council has removed the chevron signs from the sharp bend near the town’s police station.
Resident Christine Laurence told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This is a dangerous corner with fast-moving traffic. The chevrons were installed to prevent accidents occuring. Now they’ve gone, we are concerned about what will happen.”
Town councillor Helen Groves told Wednesday’s meeting: “Before the chevrons were introduced, there were regular accidents here with cars ending up in gardens and motorists getting hurt.”
“The County Council has said that the signs have been removed because they are no longer effective after having been damaged.”
“However, we need them to urgently be re-introduced. This road bend has not changed since the chevrons were originally installed many years ago. There have been no accidents since then, which shows that the chevrons have worked.”
Mayor Cllr Ken Smout said: “I suggest we let Somerset County Council know that the public has raised concerns and ask them to review the situation.”
Cllr Neville Jones added: “I know the County Council will say that they are clearing ‘sign clutter’ but they need to know that we live here and understand the dangers along our local roads better than them. Clearly, the removal of the chevrons poses a risk to drivers and residents.”
