An Olympic gold medallist has inspired a Highbridge apprentice during a special student awards held by Weston College.
Amy Williams MBE, who won Gold at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada spoke to staff, employers, governors, sponsors, family and friends at the town’s Winter Gardens.
She heard success stories from all walks of college life, including Highbridge apprentice Charlotte Kidner who was named an Apprentice of the Year.
Charlotte, 20 of Somerset Way in Highbridge, has completed her Business Administration apprenticeship at Weston Hospital.
College Principal Dr Paul Phillips OBE told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Charlotte achieved over and above her targets which led to her securing a part-time position in the clinic in addition to her Apprenticeship.”
“She completed her programme three months ahead of schedule despite working long hours and doing two jobs to an extremely high standard.”
Charlotte has now progressed to the Access for Higher Education course and is aiming for a career in the medical profession.
During the evening, the audience heard Olympic skeleton bob racer Amy Williams recall how she clinched success. She said: “Nothing is impossible. You can dream about something or you can go out and do it. When I was chosen as a reserve in the 2006 Olympics I was determined to take part in the next. I spent four years training in the gym three times a day. I’ve kept books of my training that go back 15 years of my life. I went to bed at 10pm every night, even Christmas and New Year’s Eve, in order to achieve my goal and I hope you all go on to achieve yours.”
