A Burnham-On-Sea charity that was set up in memory of teenager Charley Marks, who took his own life one year ago this week, are to open a new therapy centre and shop in the town centre to help people with mental health issues.
Charley Marks, 18, took his own life on September 10th, 2014 and a charity created in his name, In Charley’s Memory, is supporting young people and those affected by mental health.
A candle-lit gathering of Charley’s friends and the charity’s supporters was held in Burnham’s Manor Gardens to mark the anniversary.
Charley’s mother, Jo Clement, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I’ve been totally humbled and overwhelmed at the support shown from so many people in our community and further afield over the past year.”
“It has been a very busy and positive year for the charity with so much work underway to try and prevent other young people taking their lives.”
“Over £28,000 has been raised over the course of the year and we intend to open our new premises in Burnham High Street soon.”
“This will include a charity shop selling our merchandise and an upstairs area offering courses, counselling and alternative therapy.”
She added: “I am genuinely overwhelmed at how much support we have received and thank everyone who is helping us.”
“That includes our wonderful team from In Charley’s Memory, especially our secretary Emily Sanders who has been training to be a teacher while competing in the Miss England competition, and Jo Burridge-Clayton for all her help plus our many other supporters. Without their dedication, determination and kindness it would not be possible.”
