More than 25 Burnham-On-Sea traders gathered in the town’s Ritz Social Club on Tuesday evening when the Chamber of Trade and Commerce gathered to discuss a number of ‘hot topics’.
Burnham County Councillor Mike Facey outlined his thoughts on the proposals for a unitary council for Somerset and discussed how these could impact the town. He hit out at the plans, saying “they clearly do not add up” and are an “act of desperation by a council in heavy debt.”
Bob Nicholson of the Sedgemoor Tourism Association discussed how his organisation is promoting tourism in Burnham and across our area. The group is attending scores of promotional exhibitions and is soon to promote the area by advertising in the national press for the first time.
James White, Sedgemoor District Council’s new Conservation Officer, gave the audience a first look at plans to extend Burnham’s conservation area. This was generally met favourably, although members were wary about the implications for the town.
The Chamber’s committee also announced the final results of its recent shoppers’ feedback scheme. Details of a shop window competition to be held during the Easter period were unveiled, and it was announced that this year’s Christmas lights switch-on would take place on Saturday November 24th. The AGM of the group will be held on April 24th.
