The security of cash machines in Burnham-On-Sea is back in the spotlight after a holidaymaker who visited the town last month says he was contacted by Lloyds Bank regarding a new fraud scare.
Ernie Horobin, from Surrey, used his credit card to draw money from one of the cash machines in College Street (pictured) while staying at Burnham Holiday Village.
He did not suspect anything was wrong until he returned home and received a telephone call from Lloyds Bank.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’d stayed for a week in Burnham in late February and when I got home I had a call from the bank saying that a cash point had been targeted with a card ‘skimming’ device.”
“The police had contacted the bank and since my account details were found on the device, they were interested to know whether I had seen any unusual withdrawals from my account.”
“Fortunately, I hadn’t and nothing was stolen on this occasion, but it is worrying that criminals are targeting bank users in this way.”
It is not the first time that criminals have targeted cash machines in the town. Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last summer how a cash machine at Burnham’s Tesco store in Love Lane was attacked.
The so-called ‘skimming’ devices are attached to cash points in order to steal the credit card details and PIN numbers of customers, before criminals use them to remove cash.
