A Burnham-On-Sea cash machine which was severely damaged in a robbery last autumn has finally been removed this week – and it won’t be replaced, its owners have confirmed.
BT and Cashzone have decided that the cash machine at the corner of the High Street and Adam Street is not going to be replaced with a new one.
On Monday (January 8th) it was taken away after being boarded up since the cash machine explosion last November when money was stolen from inside. Police are still investigating the incident.
Town councillor Nick Tolley, who previously led a campaign to get the “eyesore” cash machine removed, has welcomed the decision not to replace it with a new one.
Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, he said: “I am delighted. It had little use and was an eyesore. I can only assume that they looked at the financial viability of the phone and realised that it was not needed by the public.”
“It would be a benefit, however, to have an ATM cash machine at the southern end of the town that is free to use like the other cash machines in our two towns.”
“But I must add that I am sorry that another facility is being lost from the High Street. Maybe a pillar style information piece such as the one at the cafe opposite the RNLI would look nice?”
A joint statement from Cashzone and BT said: “At the moment, there are no plans to install a new machine in the same location. We secured the damaged equipment and made it safe immediately after the attack.”
