Controversial proposals to hold Burnham and Highbridge’s Carnival on Remembrance Sunday in 2012 have this week been given the go-ahead by town councillors despite concerns about the clash of the two events.
The town’s Carnival Committee wants to move the popular November event from its usual Monday night slot to Sundays from two years’ time.
The proposal has been approved by councillors this week despite concerns.
Town Clerk Eileen Shaw told Monday’s council meeting: “Holding the carnival on such an important day as Remembrance Day may cause offence to some residents.”
Cllr Janet Keen added: “I do have some hesitation about this given that the carnival could impinge on such a solemn occasion. It needs careful consideration.”
But Phil New from the Carnival Committee, who was at Monday’s council meeting, said: “The carnival carts would arrive the night before, so the carnival would not impact on the remembrance ceremonies in Burnham or Highbridge in any way.”
And Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton said: “If the church services are respected and not interrupted in any way, then I don’t see having the carnival on the same day is a problem.”
Burnham-On-Sea.com reported earlier this year that the Burnham carnival organisers believe they will attract larger crowds to the town if the event is switched to a Sunday.
This year’s event is unaffected by the discussions and will be held on Monday November 8th.
