Burnham-On-Sea’s 2006 carnival queen and princesses were crowned in a ceremony at Brean on Friday night (October 13th).
Fears about a lack of nominees proved unfounded as 42 youngsters came forward to become one of the two princesses and 13 girls stood for the position of carnival queen.
In a ceremony at Brean’s Unity Farm, the four judges picked Fiona Thornton to be this year’s queen, while Jade Downing and Shawna Whitehouse are princesses.
Organisers were relieved by the large turn-out after having no nominees just 10 days ago.
“I’m really delighted about the number and quality of entries we had here,” said Steve Bird, chairman of Burnham Round Table, which oversees the annual event.
“Burnham and the surrounding area really came through in the end and we had an excellent line-up of potential queens and princesses tonight.”
“It was really difficult for the judges to make a decision – there were so many superb entries.”
The carnival queen is sponsored by The Tavern at Brean Leisure Park and her tiara is sponsored by Brides at Wedmore.
Judges this year were Steve Bird, Naomi Mellows and Gemma Gregory and Charlie Bird from Burnham’s N-Hance Beauty Studio.
